Shoot Me Monday

Gaby and I went on a whale watching tour while in San Diego recently.  It was really cool!  Somehow I managed not to get sick despite the large swells.  Thank you Bonine.  I don't know how those fisherman do it in the Bering Sea!  Five miles out from Point Loma we came across a baby fin whale and eventually caught up with the mother.

Fin whales are the second largest living thing on Earth behind the blue whale and can be over 90 feet long!  Even though they didn't come up out of the water very much, it was an awesome experience.  We didn't see any gray whales, but I guess that means we'll have to go back... darn!

Of course my eyes were looking for sea birds to.  I had good looks at Xantus's Murrelet and distant views of Rhinocerous Aucklet, Parasitic Jaeger, and Sooty Shearwater.  What a great bonus!

Later, we found some sea lions hanging out on the rocks at La Jolla Cove.

There were also some seals chillin' at the "children's pool" nearby.  Not sure why they call it that, I wouldn't let my kids near there, seals or no seals.  It gets deep in a hurry!  And at a local deli, I saw photos of a Great White Shark hunting seals there.  No thanks!

Another awesome trip to San Diego!  It never disappoints.

    1. I have visited there a lot since it's only a 6-hour drive from Tucson, but never for very long. I was lucky to get a whole week there.

    1. I noticed you moved there during the time I was there. You're lucky to be in a great birding spot. Boat trips are great if you can stomach them. We'll have to go birding next time.

  5. I especially envy your time with the whales Jeremy. I lived in Escondido as a kid and we went on fishing boats several times but never saw whales. Your photos made me think back on some of my experiences on the boats and at La Jolla Cove - remembering all the birds I used to see and mostly ignore back then. We also used to skin dive (not scuba) in the cove and play with the seals. Pretty dumb...

  6. Awesome set of shots. I saw the seals and wondered if you got heckled by the groups of activists there.
