Gaby and I
went on a whale watching tour while in San Diego recently. It was
really cool! Somehow I managed not to get sick despite the large
swells. Thank you Bonine. I don't know how those fisherman do it in
the Bering Sea! Five miles out from Point Loma we came across a baby
fin whale and eventually caught up with the mother.

Of course my eyes were looking for sea birds to. I had good looks at Xantus's Murrelet and distant views of Rhinocerous Aucklet, Parasitic Jaeger, and Sooty Shearwater. What a great bonus!

Later, we found some sea lions hanging out on the rocks at La Jolla Cove.

There
were also some seals chillin' at the "children's pool" nearby. Not
sure why they call it that, I wouldn't let my kids near there, seals or
no seals. It gets deep in a hurry! And at a local deli, I saw photos
of a Great White Shark hunting seals there. No thanks!
Another awesome trip to San Diego! It never disappoints.
San Diego sounds like it is awesome for wildlife photography!
ReplyDeleteI have visited there a lot since it's only a 6-hour drive from Tucson, but never for very long. I was lucky to get a whole week there.
DeleteGood times! I'll be making my maiden San Diego boat trip next month, can't wait.
ReplyDeleteI noticed you moved there during the time I was there. You're lucky to be in a great birding spot. Boat trips are great if you can stomach them. We'll have to go birding next time.
DeleteAwesome trip- whales are rad, though I've only seen California grays.. The seals and sea lions are adorable and rad that you saw some murrelets!
ReplyDeleteIt was totally rad! I can't wait to go back!
DeleteSounds like you spend had a glorious day on your whale watching tour. So many fantastic sights! What a joy that must have been to see the baby Fin Whale. Love all the lazy seal shots. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe baby fin whale was really cool. San Diego is always a blast.
DeleteI especially envy your time with the whales Jeremy. I lived in Escondido as a kid and we went on fishing boats several times but never saw whales. Your photos made me think back on some of my experiences on the boats and at La Jolla Cove - remembering all the birds I used to see and mostly ignore back then. We also used to skin dive (not scuba) in the cove and play with the seals. Pretty dumb...
ReplyDeleteThe whales were very special indeed. I can't wait to go back and do it again.
DeleteFantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks Scott!
DeleteAwesome set of shots. I saw the seals and wondered if you got heckled by the groups of activists there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Aaron! No, I didn't get heckled. It was pretty quiet when I was there. And the weather was perfect!
