Herring Gull in Tucson!

Late Tuesday a Herring Gull was reported 9 miles from my house.  This is a very rare gull in Arizona away from the lower Colorado River Valley.  It would be a new county and state bird for me.  I made up my mind that I would wake up early and try for it before work.  I arrived at Lakeside Park before sunrise and spotted the dirty brown gull flying around the "lake".  The last one I had seen was in San Diego almost five years ago.  Score, just what the doctor ordered!  I snapped a few pics and raced off to work.

  1. Good to see that your're getting out and about. Cool bird! We usually find a handful of these mixed in with the flocks of Ring-billed and California Gulls at the local landfills, but I don't think I've seen one yet this year.

    1. I'm long overdue for looking for gulls at a landfill. Over here the hotspots are wastewater treatment plants and the few "lakes" we have.

  3. Terrific state and county bird Jeremy! I saw two Herring Gulls and a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the shoreline of the Great Salt Lake a few days ago, like Steve said, it is Gullvember!

    1. It would be nice to have more gulls over here to study like you do in Utah. Long live Gullvember!

  4. We went to go look for it yesterday and couldn't find it. I'm thinking about the early morning run to Silverbell Recharge to find that Loon. Work does have a habit of getting in the way:)

    1. Sorry you couldn't find it. The loon is a great bird, haven't seen it yet, but saw one at Sam Lena two years ago.
